Brigadier George Mark Oswald Davy was born on 22.09.1898 at Doncaster. He received his first education at Charterhouse v Godalming.

After graduating from the Royal Military Academy, he received his first commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery on 25.01.1918. Since them, till 1931 he serves at various positions within the Royal Artillery, Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery.

In 1919, he completes a gunnery course at the Gunnery school at Shoeburyness, and after completing it, he is assigned to the 130th Brigade of the RFA 28th Division at Anatolia. He remains with this unit until the following year, when he is transferred to the Royal Field Artillery in India.

In 1931 he received rank as a Captain and is assigned to the 3rd King's Own Hussars and subsequently, he is sent study at the Staff College, Camberley, after it graduation he returns to the unit which is stationed at York.

In 1935, Davy was appointed as a brigade major of the 150th Brigade and held this office until 1937, when he became a company commander at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst for the next two years. After completing this assignment, he studied in 1939 Royal Naval Staff College, Greenwich.

Between years 1939-1940 he held staff positions as GSO2 and GSO1. In 1939 Davy is Chief Staff Officer of British Mission to French general Maurice Gustave Gamelin, Paris (Archive Catalogues).


The Seventh and Three Enemies, book

In May 1940, he is appointed as the head of the military mission of the Ministry of War sent to Belgian King Leopold. On completion of this assignment he becomes Deputy Commander of 3 Hussars, 7th Armoured Brigade stationed at Western Desert. Subsequently, he is the staff officer of GSO 1 of the British Troops Headquarters, Greece, for evacuation of British forces from Greece (Archive Catalogues).

In July 1941, he was entrusted with acting command of the 3rd Armoured Brigade in North Africa, Tobruk and on 27.06.1941, he was given command (CO) of the 7th Armoured Brigade and the rank of Brigadier (Acting). He holds this command till December when he is reassigned to the General Staff.

During this period he is mentioned in the despatches in December 1941 (The Gazette No.) and a month after that, he received a DSO (The Gazette No. 35422) for his great performance at SIDI REZEGH (Citation and Immediate Award, 2020).

From March 1942 to January 1944, he is the director of military operations of the Middle East Command and from January to June 1944, deputy assistant chief of the Allied General Staff, in Algiers. From this date until 1945, he is the commander of the land forces of the Adriatic Sea in southern Italy.

Till end of the war, he was mentioned twice more in the despatches (WW2 Talk, 2023) and on 18.02.1943 he received the MBE (The Gazette No. 38018). He was also awarded the Legion of Merit on 18 July 1947 (The Gazette No. 38018).

After the war ends, he returns to the rank of Colonel (Generals) and acts as a liaison officer with the Polish (repatriation? (WW2 Talk, 2023)) Forces.

He retires 13.01.1948 (The Gazette No. 38174), but is recalled again in 1956 during the Cyprus Emergency. During this period he serves at HQ Middle East Command in Cyprus. He retired for good again in 1959.

Besides his great military career, George Davy was also a writer, painter and sculptor. In 1952 was published his book "The Seventh and Three Enemies". In 1959-1962 he attended the Byam Shaw School of Art. His works have been exhibited at Royal Society of British Artists, NS, Royal Watercolour Society, Royal Scottish Academy and Paris Salon (Obituary, 2022).

George Davy died on 16 June 1983.

Brigadier George Mark Oswald Davy sa narodil v roku 1898 v Doncastry a svoje vzdelanie získal v škole Charterhouse v Godalmingu.

Po skončení Královskej vojenskej akadémie, získava 25.01.1918 svoje prvé zaradenie a to ako druhý poručík u Královského polného delostrelectva. Od tohto roku až do 1931 slúži na rôznych postoch v rámci Královského delostrelectva, Královského jazdného delostrelectva (Royal Horse Artillery) a Královského polného delostrelectva (Royal Field Artillery).

V roku 1919 absolvuje strelecký kuz v škole strelby (Gunnery School) v Shoeburyness a po skončení kurzu je pridelený k k 130. brigáde RFA 28. divizie ktorá sa nachádza v Anatolii. S touto jednotkou zostáva až do nasledovného roku, kedy je prevelený ku Královskému polnému delostrelectvu v Indii.

V 1931 sa stáva kapitánom a je priradený k 3. královmu vlastnému husárskemu pluku (3rd The King's Own Hussars). V nasledovnom období absolvuje štúdiá na štábnom kolégiu v Camberley po ktorého skončení sa vracia k jednote ktorá sa nachádza v tom čase v Yorku.

V 1935 je menovaný brigádnym majorom 150. brigády a túto funkciu zastáva do 1937 kedy sa stáva na ďalšie dva roky velitelom roty na Královskom vojenskom kolégiu (Royal Military College, Sandhurst). Po skončení na tomto poste absolvuje štúdium v 1939 na Královskom námornom štábnom kolégiu (Royal Naval Staff College) Greenwich.

V období rokov 1939-1940 zastáva štábne pozície ako štábny dôsojník GSO2 a GSO. V roku 1939 je vrchný štábny dôstojník britskej vojenskej misie pri gen. Maurice Gustave Gamelin (Archive Catalogues).

V máji 1940 je menovaný vedúcim vojenskej misie Minsterstva vojny vyslanej ku královi Belgie Leopoldovi. Po skončení tohto poverenia sa stáva zástupcom velitela 3. královho vlastného husárskeho pluku (3 Hussars, 7 Armoured Bde), ktorý pôsobí v západnej púšti. Následne je odvelený od jednotky a stáva sa štábnym dôstojníkom GSO 1 velenia britských jednotiek (British Troops Headquarters) v Grécku pre ich evakuáciu (Archive Catalogues).

V júly 1941 je poverený dočasným velením 3. obrnenej brigády (3rd Armoured Brigade) v severnej Afrike, Tobruk. 27.06.1941 je mu zverené velenie (CO) 7. obrnenej brigády ako zastupujúci brigadier. Jendotke velí do decembra tohto samého roku, kedy je znovu pridelený ku generálnemu štábu. 30.12.1941 je zmienený v rozkaze (The Gazette No. ) a mesiac na to, obdrží DSO (The Gazette No. 35422) za jeho skvelé počinanie u Sidi Rezegh (Citation and Immediate Award, 2020).

Od marca 1942 do januára 1944 pôsobí ako riaditel pre vojenské operácie Velitelstva stredného východu (Middle East Command) a od januára do júna 1944 pôsobí ako zástupca asistenta náčelníka generálneho štábu spojeneckých sil (General Staff of Allied Forces) v Alžíri.

Od tohto dátumu až do 1945 je velitelom pozemných síl Jaderského mora v južnej Itálii. Do konca vojny Davy ešte dva krát zmienený v rozkaze a 18.02.1943 obdržal MBE (The Gazette No. 35908). Rovnako sa mu dostalo oceneia od vlády USA a to Záslužná legia 18.07.1947 (The Gazette No. 38018).

Po skončení vojny sa vracia k hodnosti plukovníka a pôsobí ako styčný dôstojník s Polskými (repatriačnými? (WW2 Talk, 2023)) silami.

K 13.01.1948 (The Gazette No. 38174). odchádza do výslužby, avšak v 1956 je znovu povolaný počas Cyperskej pohotovosti a slúži u Velitelstva stredného východu na Cypre. Znovu a tentokrát nadobro odchádza do výslužby v 1959.

George Davy okrem jeho vojenskej kariéry bola j spisovatel, maliar a sochár. V 1952 mu vyšla kniha “The Seventh and Three Enemies”. V 1959-1962 navštevoval Byam Shaw School of Art. Jeho diela boli vystavené okrem iného v Royal Society of British Artists, NS, Royal Watercolour Society, Royal Scottish Academy a Paris Salon (Obituary, 2022).

George Davy zomiera 16. júna 1983.
