U Poltavy se 27. června (juliánský kal.)/ 8. července (gregoriánský kal.) 1709 odehrála rozhodující bitva tzv. Severní války mezi Švédskem a Ruskem. V této bitvě byla ruskými vojsky vedenými carem Petrem Velikým poražena vojska Švédska vedená králem Karlem XII. a maršálem Carlem Gustafem Rehnskiöldem.


V ruštině a ukrajinštině se vžilo rčení "dopadl jak Švédové u Poltavy" (Пропал, как швед под Полтавой rus., пропав як швед під Полтавою ukr.) odpovídající českému "dopadl jak sedláci u Chlumce".
