9. Tváří v tvář nebezpečí obklíčení musela ustoupit do Tarragony, i když nakonec byla 16. ledna 1939 obklíčena a zničena v obranné linii řeky Gayá. | The 143rd Mixed Brigade was established between May and June 1937 in Figueras in the barracks at the castle and was based at Mountain Battalion 1 "Chiclana". Immediately after training, the brigade was sent to the Aragonese front in Escatron as a backup unit for the Battle of Belchite and was incorporated into the 44th Division XII. Army Corps. She fought in the "F" group in Fuentes de Ebro. In the spring of 1938 and the beginning of the offensive of the national forces in Aragon, she was sent to strengthen the front in Quinta, but eventually had to retreat due to enemy pressure. She continued to retreat east, passing through the Tamarite de Litera and Vértice Viñaza, until she was beyond the Segre River. During this retreat, its commander, Captain Felipe, fell in battle and was replaced by militia Major Hermenegildo Roca Oliver. After the end of the fighting in Aragon, the 143rd Mixed Brigade was subordinated to the 24th Division. On June 9, 1938, the 143rd Segre Brigade crossed the Vilanova de la Barca and created a small bridgehead that it would be able to maintain until June 17, having to return to its original position amid major difficulties caused by the artificial flooding of the river. For this action, the brigade was awarded a collective medal for bravery, as well as its commander, Major Hermenegildo Roca Oliver. During the Battle of Ebro the brigade remained in reserve, without participating in the fighting. At the end of 1938, at the beginning of the Francoist offensive in Catalonia, the brigade occupied the southern sector of the river Ebro. In the face of the danger of siege, she had to retreat to Tarragona, although she was finally besieged and destroyed on January 16, 1939, in the defensive line of the Gayá River. |
