8. | The 109th Mixed Brigade was formed in Villena in March 1937. At the end of the training period, the 109th Mixed Brigade was assigned to the Extremadura Army, with which it was to participate in a plan prepared by Álvarez Coqu for an offensive against the national zone to reach the Portuguese border. The 109th Mixed Brigade is integrated into the 37th Division VII in May. Army Corps. On June 13, 1937, the brigade commander Luis Pedreño Ramírez died during the air bombing. On July 8, the 109th Mixed Brigade had to rush to fill a gap in the Miajadas sector due to the withdrawal of forces from the 20th and 63rd Mixed Brigades. In February 1938, the 109th Mixed Brigade took part in the Battle of La Serena in the Quemada, Acebuche and Argallén mountains without much success. In April, one of his battalions took part in an attempt to break through the front at the bridgehead Puente del Arzobispo. Although Colonel Burill, then head of the extremadur army, was intended to occupy Villar del Pedroso, Navasierra, Calera, and Carrascalejo, they occupied the latter city for only a few hours. In the first phase of the battle in the Merida sector, in June 1938, two companies from the brigade came to the aid of the 91st Mixed Brigade, which defended the banks of the Zújar River and lost the port of Castuera on June 18. In the second phase, in July 1938, the brigade entered the fight fully, trying to prevent the passage of Guadiana by national forces. The fighting began in the Casa de la Rana sector and continued at the top of Gorbea, unable to stop the advance of national forces until reaching the Gargaligas River, shortly after which the 109th Mixed Brigade had to withdraw to Coronado. During this operation, the unit suffered relatively few losses compared to other participating brigades, because its strength after the fighting amounted to 2,127 men. However, as the offensive continued, the 109th was imprisoned in a siege and completely destroyed. Although the brigade was restored, it no longer participated in the Republican Army's final offensive in Extremadura in January 1939. |
