Guys,

My name is michael wood, and I'm wondering if anyone might know if S.Pz.Abt 503/FHH abandoned any King Tigers either in the Nyutra Bridgehead or between Nyitra and Bab between the 30.3.45 to 3.4.45, thanks.

I haven't now relevant books with me, so that I can't look for detail information. As far as I remember sPzAbt.503 „FHH“ has lost a few tanks in South-Western Slovakia at the end of March and beginning of April 1945. The offensive of Soviet 53rd Army began on 25th March 1945 and Panzerkorps Feldherrnhalle was forced to withdraw from positions on Hron (Gran) river. The sPzAbt.503 was situated in the area Eastern and South-Eastern from Nitra (Nyitra) and had retreated in the direction of Veľký Báb and Báb villages (Bab Castle in mentioned in sPzAbt.503 chronicle as well as in Franz Kurowski book). During this period sPzAbt.503 abandoned a few tanks on the road of retreat. (I don't remember the exact number). Those tanks were damaged or broken and there was no time to repair them or evacuate.

Some time ago I have seen a picture of one of those tanks published in Polish or Russian journal with subtitle “Abandoned Koenigstiger of sPzAbt.503 “FHH″ in Nitra (Nyitra) area, Spring 1945″. There were also published memoirs of Soviet veteran recently in Russia. He served as AT gunner and fought Koenigstigers in the area of Nitra at the end of March and beginning of April 1945.

Thank Victor for his help. And if possible if he could check how many King Tigers were left in Nitra. I have found that the 2 Tigers sent to Vienna on the 5.11.44, were collected and returned to Pz.Abt 503 during March 1945, they arrived in Verebely, Lt Rollik was in charge of the collection party. On the 30.3.45, the Abt reported it had 12 Tigers that needed serious repairs. So with 16 Tigers lost during April/May 1945, it seems 12 Tigers were abandoned between the 30.3.45 to 31.3.45. If Victor can find out how many Tigers were left in Nitra, that would be great.

Guys,

Yesterday, had huge problems trying to sign in, big thanks to Radek for all his help. Well today, using a different system, got in first time. Anyway guys, this is a real burning issue for me. Big shout to Viktor, if you can get back to me about 503 Tigers in Nitra, I would be really grateful. I know Radek has forwarded messages onto you.

For Radek, I'm the guy who co-authored Waffen -SS Panzer units in Normandy in 2000 with Jeff Dugdale. Since then I've been researching 3 SS-Pz.Div T for the last 14 years. At present I'm trying to locate all the Tigers losses in Hungary, Austria and Slovakia. The only losses I need are those in Nitra.
